Acquisitions carry the headline this week in the open source community.  Both HP and Teradata took their wallets out and invested in strategic businesses.  HP announced the acquisition of the cloud computing company Eucalyptus.  Teradata followed up recent software acquisitions with the purchase of Think Big Analytics, a big data consulting firm.   While Apple released their recent product updates this week, Red Hat released an enhanced Satellite offering which features new cloud support and Linux.com covered app development for Android wearable devices.

  • HP doubled down on cloud computing with week, announcing its acquisition of Eucalyptus, an open source private and hybrid cloud company offering AWS compatibility. This news came on the heels of their new HP Helion OpenStack Professional Services portfolio of offerings.
  • The new version of Red Hat Satellite now supports the management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux in the cloud.  PC World spoke with a Red Hat senior product manager about the newly release Red Hat Satellite 6.
  • Teradata followed up its recent acquisitions of Hadapt and Revelytix with the purchase of Think Big Analytics, a move which VentureBeat argues will “add to Teradata’s credibility as a company that works with, not in opposition to, Hadoop”.
  • Apigee’s new open source project, Zetta, providing tools to help build devices and APIs to connect and enable the Internet of Things, was featured on Wired.
  • Have you ever stumbled upon a bug while using open source software, but didn’t know how to fix it? A team of programmers from Montreal developed Git Bounty at this week’s Disrupt SF conference, which allows anyone to post and promote a bug they need fixed to the open source developer community.
  • Linux.com covered the new version of Tizen’s Wearable SDK and how it can be used to develop new apps for Samsung’s Gear S smartwatch.
  • Former Red Hat CTO Brian Stevens followed his departure from the open source software company with a new position at Google.  ZDNet was the first to announce that Stevens is now Vice President of Cloud Platforms for Google.

When faced with layoffs, some turn to career counseling and job hunts while others turn to Linux and tweeting toilets.
